Course in Italian - Basic and intermediate levels
Part 1 - Teaching principles and methods
Chapter 1 - No anxiety. Fun to learn.
A new language’s learning process is usually felt as a stressful experience: anxiety, fear of being tested and low esteem of one’s progresses can make the participation to lessons stressful and sometimes, discourage the student from keeping on following the course.
The fun to learn is the secret to make the lessons one hundred percent enjoyable. The absence of stress increases the effectiveness of the lessons as well.
Chapter 2 - The four main brain activities in the language learning process.
In the learning process, the brain engages different areas, corresponding to different activities: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Very often the learner tends to prefer one of them over the others. This kind of unbalanced dynamics impedes the correct development of the learner's skills and creates a sense of insecurity and, again, anxiety, when it comes to facing a situation that involves one of the other three. During the course, the balanced growth of the four skills is constantly monitored and stimulated.
Chapter 3 - Constant use of 100% of the notions and rules.
Even a student that knows only one word in Italian can actively participate to the lessons. The partial knowledge is seen here as an opportunity, not a limit. In these classes it is not only allowed, but strongly encouraged, the use of a “mixed up” language. I some of you has seen the movie “Il nome della Rosa” and remembers a monk called Salvatore, then they can probably have an idea of what I am talking about. The partial knowledge of several students can be also combined to create a multi-user building of sentences. This last sentence suits, of course, the case of a course with many students.
Chapter 4 - Teamwork and interactivity.
What is the “ignorance”? The lack of knowledge of something. A natural and inevitable condition of any human being on earth, even the most educated person. Unfortunately, in many countries the scholar system creates an environment and a culture where the ignorance is seen like something the student should feel ashamed of, something to hide. But how can I learn something if I do not show my teacher I do not know it? This is a paradox I will never understand. The knowledge is not something to keep for oneself. So, showing that a concept, or a rule or any other kind of notion is unclear or even completely unknown is only to be considered as a manifestation of curiosity, sincerity and good willing. The best start for a good interaction with the teacher and the other students.
Talking about interactivity, the prohibition of getting help from the other colleagues is another rusty habit of the old school that needs to be dismantled. The group work, when organized and channelled, can be an excellent way to fill each other gaps and to keep all the students at a common level.
Of course, again, the applicability of the principles described in this chapter depends on the number of participants, so let’s just hope for the best!
Chapter 5 - Multimedia exercises.
Thanks God we live in an age where the tools we have at our disposal are innumerable. Here as follows you have a list of learning activities that involve the use of several media and that will be part of the course:
• Listening exercises with audio and video files.
• Subtitles writing and comparison with the official text.
• Newspapers and books readings.
• Group chats with the teacher.
